How to Maintain Your Water Storage Tank and Keep Water Fresh

Regular maintenance is essential to ensure water quality, extend tank lifespan, and prevent costly emergency repairs. Whether you operate a stainless steel, GRP, or galvanized tank, following a structured maintenance program will keep your system reliable for decades.

1. Establish an Inspection Schedule

Conduct visual inspections every 3–6 months and a thorough internal inspection annually. Check for:

Drain the tank completely at least once per year. Scrub interior surfaces with a soft brush and approved cleaning solution — avoid abrasive materials that can damage protective coatings. For potable water tanks, use only NSF-approved disinfectants and rinse thoroughly before refilling.

Remove sediment buildup from the tank floor. Sediment accumulation reduces effective capacity and can harbor bacteria. In areas with hard water, descaling may be needed every 2–3 years.
