Regular maintenance is essential to ensure water quality, extend tank lifespan, and prevent costly emergency repairs. Whether you operate a stainless steel, GRP, or galvanized tank, following a structured maintenance program will keep your system reliable for decades.
1. Establish an Inspection Schedule
Conduct visual inspections every 3–6 months and a thorough internal inspection annually. Check for:
- Panel joint leaks or gasket deterioration
- Corrosion spots on metal panels, fittings, and bolts
- Structural settlement or foundation cracks
- Overflow pipe, vent, and manhole condition
- Water level indicator and float valve operation
2. Clean the Tank Interior
Drain the tank completely at least once per year. Scrub interior surfaces with a soft brush and approved cleaning solution — avoid abrasive materials that can damage protective coatings. For potable water tanks, use only NSF-approved disinfectants and rinse thoroughly before refilling.
Remove sediment buildup from the tank floor. Sediment accumulation reduces effective capacity and can harbor bacteria. In areas with hard water, descaling may be needed every 2–3 years.
3. Maintain Water Quality
Stagnant water promotes bacterial growth. Ensure regular water turnover — tanks should not sit unused for extended periods. Install insect screens on vents and overflow pipes. Keep the tank lid sealed and locked to prevent contamination from debris, birds, and unauthorized access.
For potable applications, test water quality quarterly for coliform bacteria, pH, and turbidity. Document results for regulatory compliance.
4. Protect External Components
Inspect external ladder, guardrails, and access platforms for rust or damage. Repaint galvanized components when the zinc coating shows wear. Lubricate valve stems and check flange bolt torque annually — loose bolts are the most common cause of panel joint leaks.
5. Address Issues Promptly
Small problems become expensive repairs when ignored. Replace worn gaskets at the first sign of seepage. Treat surface rust on galvanized tanks immediately with zinc-rich primer. For stainless steel, passivate any scratched areas to restore the chromium oxide layer.
6. Keep Maintenance Records
Maintain a logbook documenting inspection dates, findings, cleaning procedures, water test results, and repairs. This documentation supports warranty claims, regulatory audits, and helps identify recurring issues before they escalate.
